About newgrounds

Posted by nathanielmilburn Jul. 2, 2009 @ 5:21 PM EDT

No offense Newgrounds, but you're putting too much stuff on the site and you're pushing the flash further and further down the page and too much pointless things around the flash.

You guys are making it too complex and not in a good way :/

k, my opinion.

I can see what your saying, dude. I agree fully.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:25 PM Incognitus says:

I'm certainly not liking the big "Game of the Moment" section that's just appeared on the front page...

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:27 PM Aryk says:

Too bad our opinions are never listened to.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:28 PM Keanoo says:

That was what i was thinking :( . Anyways, is it possible you could give a little status % on CampNorth? the anxiety is killing me >: )

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:03 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

I'd say around half the pages of campnorth are coded roughly, right now we're going through everything and making it roughly, then going back over it and styling it as we go.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:28 PM FrozenFire says:

Ive been noticing some advertisements with sound on webpages
It's kinda annoying since you don't trigger them but OMG there's a commercial.

I don't know if that's what you are talking about but that's whats annoying me ATM.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:03 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

nah haven't seen that yet

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:31 PM TheBoogley says:

flash is going down {:O
GAME OF THE MOMENT? |:O
why can't things just go back to the way they were?

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:04 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

i wish they could, NG used to be so badass :c

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:31 PM likitty says:

i agree.this site has to much stuff.so i agree with you 100%

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:33 PM Slain-By-The-Bell says:

I totally agree. The "Game of the Moment" is really in-your-face and annoying. Soon we'll be spammed with tons of unskippable ads before getting to watch a flash or listen to audio. The widescreen layout annoyed me as well, that's why I watch on the classic one. If Newgrounds decides to mess with the audio portal to the extent it did with the flash portal, I'll go on a murderous rampage (end of rant).

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:06 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

I personally think they should focus more on the flash since NG is all about flash, it's nice they're trying to appeal to everyone with Audio, Art and I'm guessing a lit portal is coming but Flash is their main thing. They should focus more on getting that to the viewer as easy and simple as possible.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:38 PM Wholyish says:

I think the "Game of the Moment" nonsense is mainly because that game and Zeebarf were sponsored by Newgrounds. It's exclusive to the site, so they're trying to push it. Most of the other stuff, on the other hand, can be put on other sites, and that kind of thing.

But I still agree with the whole pushing everything down. Too much going on on the front page, imo.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:39 PM Krazu says:

Newgrounds likes their users to wait about 1 minute to load the frontpage fully.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:41 PM Kyaztro says:

I was going to make a post about it, but it looks like you beat me to it

http://kyaztro.webs.com/index.html.ht m

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:08 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

yeah the whole game of the moment isn't that bad, but what would be the first thing you'd want to see when you come to NG? Site News and a huge ad for 1 flash game?

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:44 PM Oney says:

i think they should highlight the big game and movie on frontpage or something

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:08 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

huh? they are for that game

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:49 PM sucho says:

how so? you talkin a-boot the art portal? it hardly makes an impact, even the tab on the border is pretty small. i think the front page should get a re-design though, and be flash only. no audio and less ads. i wouldn't detract any content from the site itself or any of the portals, but the front page should probably stick to its guns.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:10 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

i'm just saying they shouldn't lose focus on the flash, the art portal is fine with me (nothing wrong about it other then it's not very exciting) but the flash keeps getting more and more complex just to play and watch something.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:53 PM dustyh says:

Seems like it's becoming more about the money than about the art. Maybe I'm wrong but that's how it's starting to appear. Everything is about cash prizes and revenue sharing and ad profits, and all of the good flash work typically contains ads on the loading screen. Getting harder and harder for the little guy to get noticed around here too, as if it weren't hard enough. With all the money being offered, more professionals are going to start making appearances here and that'll be all you see. The same stuff on the other million flash game websites.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:11 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

Well I think the users cause that to happen too, NG is a competitive site, you have to try hard to stand out and there's going to be people that most of the users like and then they tend to stick out way more then others and then people complain about them sticking out.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 5:59 PM Jimp says:

Hopefully itll be sorted out when the front page goes wide, games are getting lower and lower down!

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:12 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

Hopefully the wide layout will look nice, I'm still iffy on the wide layout for flash :c

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:02 PM Vincoid says:

Agreed, it would've been way better if they kept it simple.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:14 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

people love to complicate things, tends to always happen

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:08 PM OdHero says:

It seems like some sort of rushed decision. They've got that bytesize box to the side that they never update, they should of used that.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:14 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

oh that bytesize thing, i'm not sure how they feel on random images, although i heard it's horrible for the server but they should change the image up a bit, one they'd be able to advertise more things and two that one image won't get old so fast.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:20 PM ShampooNinja says:

At least give us the option to clutter our page with worthless shit or not to, Newgrounds....

Please.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:23 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

yeah i wish customization was a little better but i'm sure they're working on that

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:26 PM Fawx says:

newgrounds version 6.66

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:26 PM Starogre says:

I definitely support Newgrounds' growth but isn't there a point where they could just stop when we have the things we need? I donno. It just seems like it's all just to give their coders something to do. The one other thing is a video formatted animation portal.

Spammers suck but meh. I think overpaying people for flash games is the cause of putting more and more ginormous ads promoting certain things such as zeebarf's point and click games or griswold the goblin point and click games

personally i hate point and click games but can't he move that ad like way down the page under audio or something? i donno

i like newgrounds but being able to see ALL the front page material without scrolling used to be awesome

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:49 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

yeah there's a point where you can go to far with adding things, they could instead work on what they have out and keep trying to make it better, but it's up to them

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:36 PM Lagamuffin says:

NG is getting too big for it's own good, Just like CN did.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:46 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

CN had a different issue going on

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:38 PM MindChamber says:

things will even out and look better once the wide redesign is launched. so I wouldn't worry so much over anything you see now, as its placement isn't permanent.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:49 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

cool, i'm excited to see how it looks and works with the content

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:42 PM Sausau says:

Not only that, but just look at what get the higher scores these days. Hentai Parody ? Stickanimation with a WKUK sketch audio ? Explosm's random shit ?
Even the flash sector is becoming an untellable mess.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 6:49 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

that's what the viewers want, you guys choose it

Jul. 2, 2009 | 7:00 PM Rutger says:

Ah, well, it's all up to NG. Eventually most users just accept it. But yeah, you are kinda right man. It is getting a bit messy all. Things could be a bit more simple.

Whole life should be more simple actually. Everything's too complicated :c I miss the days in which I didn't have to care about anything.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 7:22 PM rockyace42 says:

Yeah. Game of the Moment is annoying, especially because I've already completed Remus 100%.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 7:28 PM Skeik-Sprite says:

I think the main problem is that it's stealing publicity from all the other movies.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 7:34 PM Emanhattan says:

that game of the moment thing has got to go

Jul. 2, 2009 | 7:53 PM MichaelHurst says:

Spam collab?

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:24 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

nah too lazy

Jul. 2, 2009 | 8:00 PM Luis says:

yea tom was playin designer this morning. i kinda like how they are trying things here and there.. some things work well some dont. but just kinda using the site as a sandbox is kind of cool ... its better to try it and get negative feedback on it than to invest all that time and effort into making it final and THEN find that people dont like it.

I do agree that big promo does take up alot of real estate for a static image.

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:25 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

yeah, they could even put it where bytesize was and peolpe would still see it just as much

Jul. 2, 2009 | 8:06 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

Game of the Moment is a good idea. Except that its HUGE. It needs to be a bit flatter.

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:25 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

they should make it bigger and remove everything else, so everyone just sees that game

Jul. 2, 2009 | 8:07 PM Tystarr says:

I like the whole EVERYTHING by everyone factor but I would love to see the focus brought back to the flash.

The Music portal great! The art portal is fine. But I'm hoping it stops there.

Simplify the site, probably get rid of that "item of the moment' and you and I Ng will be back on great terms!

Can't wait to see the redesign.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 8:12 PM ZekeySpaceyLizard says:

you know what they could do that would divide everything up nicely

just split the whole frontpage longways vertically into 3 sections. Flash. Games. Music.

And frontpage whatever there.

Put a bar on top for front page posts and admin announcements.

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:26 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

or they could make 3 different urls for each portal and seperate em, like artgrounds, flashgrounds, musicgrounds

yep

Jul. 2, 2009 | 8:19 PM hansari says:

haha...looking back now...none of the 'Tank Award' winners got this sort of recognition... :P

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:27 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

they got a award to sit on their desk

Jul. 2, 2009 | 8:29 PM hansari says:

Oh, and just because its a "Newgrounds exclusive", doesn't mean the game should get enough preferential treatment to push the other content down.

If they really wanted to, they could have just done something with the banner...

logos/ahheadder2_20_07.gif

At this rate, "everything by everyone" will need the phrase "just keep scrolling down the page" slapped onto it :P

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:27 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

well they have that art thing up there, maybe they didn't want to swap it too soon

Jul. 2, 2009 | 9:06 PM IamWeird33 says:

I don't agree

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:28 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

i knew some people wouldn't

Jul. 2, 2009 | 9:06 PM xXxAlecxXx says:

CampNorth when it's up: :D

When it's down: :(

Jul. 2, 2009 | 10:03 PM SamIam says:

I'm holding off my complaints till they release the wide layout. Hopefully, it will make everything more organized.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 10:09 PM NegativeONE says:

Looks like a lot of people know what's best for the self-made Flash giant :P Alright, dickish one-liners aside, there's too much fear of change here. People view any experiment, tweak, or even joke (the Chinese April Fools comes to mind), as exactly how things will be. The truth of the matter, something that has proven itself again and again, is that there's always more to these things than you see. The Game of the Moment is certainly no exception. *Trust* the people who made this site awesome, and accept that sometimes they will do something because of their own intentions, which isn't always waiting hand and foot on what the end user tells them they want. Frankly, sometimes people don't know what they want.

And I'm NOT defending Game of the Moment just because it currently benefits me quite directly.

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:30 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

I understand your point and I don't care how they run their site, it's their site, but doesn't mean I can't voice my opinion.

You guys always bring up the point it's new so wait it out, but that kind of point doesn't always work. I still prefer the old redesign and a few other changes they got rid of and this blog isn't just about the game of the moment also, it's about all the changes their making.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 10:25 PM sucho says:

i can agree with that. i'm excited about the streamlining possibilities of a wide redesign, i'll miss the narrow left'n'right margins. ever-body likes being tall... and long.....

Jul. 2, 2009 | 10:26 PM MrScriblam says:

hey bro hows campnorth goin along

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:31 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

it's coming along

Jul. 2, 2009 | 11:30 PM squeakytoad says:

I agree.

I also heavily disapprove of the massive "Game of the Moment" turd on my screen.

Jul. 2, 2009 | 11:42 PM Starogre says:

in response to one of your responses, yeah it's hard for the little guy to get noticed nowadays. i was very lucky to come here when i did when flash ads barely even began (when games of gondor was starting its contests)

Jul. 3, 2009 | 12:31 AM AustinBreed says:

Magic Pink Man should have been game of the moment.

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:32 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

I agree

Jul. 3, 2009 | 1:52 AM evanarmagast says:

i agree completely. newgrounds is a flash portal website with an audio portal. i really love the audio portal, but the art portal really isn't doing it for me. the art forum pretty much did the job. they should focus on the flash portal, and not on adding new features that people will only use for about a month. nothing good has come out since we all got our own userpages.

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:33 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

yeah it's kind of like how Music and Cartoon channels start doing shitty reality tv shows, it always ruins the channel, but the people who run it never seem to see that.

Jul. 3, 2009 | 2:16 AM W-P-S says:

fuc u slut i like the art porta;l

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:34 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

art portal is fine, i don't have anything against it, only thing to me is it's boring and i'm just not interested in uploading at all

Updated: Jul. 5, 2009, 4:36 PM

Jul. 3, 2009 | 3:51 AM MarcyVF says:

Sadly enough I agree with you.

Jul. 3, 2009 | 4:33 AM SquidGoneFishing says:

Newgrounds started of as a site for flash animation. That doesn't mean a site cannot expand to incorporate more content for a wider audience. Camp North had a sort of art portal too. Though I will agree with you that most of the flash that gets through sometimes is...less that great? But then there's dudes like you that submit great stuff, I guess you just can't let the other bull crap cloud the actual talent that Newgrounds has.

Jul. 5, 2009 | 4:39 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

I don't really understand your point. Sites can expand, that's fine with me, but not all sites are made to expand. Camp North had a focus on Art not Flash, so your reference to Camp North is kind of confusing.

Jul. 6, 2009 | 1:37 PM TurkeyOnAStick says:

Not too sure on my reaction, so I'll collect my thoughts as I type.

Medals promote NG reg made games to NG regs, reap benefits of loyalty.

Art portal, can't see how it has a detrimental effect on Flashes, 'cept most new members who want to showcase their work I doubt are going to get involved with Flashes.

Ain't keen on the new featured Zeebarf thing, I love the game, but one single spotlight puts other equally good front page submissions in the dark.

And I use the classic viewing option, because I prefer the layout. Thankfully, an option.

Whilst I'm spewing opinions, I may as well say Camp North did the job that it did well.

Jul. 6, 2009 | 3:58 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

Yeah well Camp North is more of a different type of site. I don't want it to come off as I'm trying to put NG down and want people to go to Camp North, I hope people don't see it that way cause I have no problem with people using both or just 1 of the 2.

Jul. 7, 2009 | 2:51 AM Spaghetti14 says:

I just left a review saying drugs are bad on your piece you did after doing acid or whatever, and I tried to write a new one saying this, but it wouldn't let me, so here.
Drugs should be ones one choice and I don't have a right to tell you not to do them, I just generally have heard they aren't that good, so nevermind.
I still really enjoy all your artwork.
I admire you for making it.
Also, I've never been to camp north, but I've heard its good, so I look forward to its return from the land of editing.
By the way, if you have enough time, what do you think of my artwork? It's okay if you don't answer, just curious.

Jul. 7, 2009 | 3:02 PM nathanielmilburn responds:

you're not bad for your age so far, just keep drawing.

the whole drug debate is really up to the person using em, just don't base your opinions on drugs based on what others tell you about em.

Jul. 7, 2009 | 4:56 AM TurkeyOnAStick says:

Nah, I know you ain't putting the site down to promote Camp North. It's a user's opinion.

Jul. 8, 2009 | 12:53 PM test-object says:

Dem young whippersnappers! I agree on the "Game of the moment" protest of course. Why not a "movie of the moment" as well? :000

Scallywags! *snort*

why not worst flash of the moment

Jul. 8, 2009 | 3:16 PM cantflyman says:

Um, W-P-S was joking.

With that aside, I don't really care a ton about the Came of the Moment banner, but they could shrink it. Tom knows what he's doing.

i know he was joking, i was just rambling
